Character Concept WIP
I'm working on this character concept for a friend, for one of the characters for the book he's apparently writing.
The brief's pretty vague when I get requests from him and usually has a couple of characters from other media listed as "inspiration" which if I'm honest I'm not a fan of. Once I get it into my head which characters the idea is being derived from I often just end up drawing those characters.
So this is what I've come up with so far, essentially a female rogue/assassin/ninja type character who's not above showing off her "assets"

Last Sketch of the Holiday
I'm back to work in about half an hour so I thought I'd just share the last sketch of my holiday.
Just your common or garden variety Wolverine, that I've sketched for the blog probably more than any other character.
Quick pencil sketch on layout paper, about 20 mins.
I'm Batman!
A while ago I switched sketchbooks down to a Moleskine, which is a little bigger than A5 I think, because it was easier to carry around for when I get the urge to start drawing. I do very little drawing at home so having something more portable was a boon.
As I've been using it for a while, all the sketches I've been doing have all been pretty small, so tonight I decided to work on something a bit bigger. I've found nearly a half a dozen A3 sketchbooks in the back of a cupboard that I've pretty much just drawn on 1 or 2 pages and then forgotten about.
So tonight's piece is a large ink drawing of Batman, focusing more on mood and lighting than intricate details. I really enjoyed myself with this pic, right up until I tried to scan it.
My scanner's very old, and A4, I really need to get an A3 one and a printer in the same size. But that's a little out of my price range at the moment :(
Short version, there's a little more to this pic than is seen here, as I'm too lazy to scan it in sections and try to piece it together like a jigsaw.
Anyway I hope you guys like it, I'd love to hear some feedback. If this sort of stuff is popular I'll do some more different character maybe.

Emma Frost
Just a quick sketch for today, I'm winding down the end of my holiday and I'm spending more time doing domestic stuff before I have to get back to work on Sunday.
Today's quick character sketch is a slightly provocative Emma Frost, aka The White Queen from Marvel's X-Men franchise. As a character she's always been fond of using her sexuality as a weapon, and I've had some comments that my blog could do with a little "sexing up". So I thought what the hell I'll give it a shot.
I'm not really happy with her face, while it's technically fine (two eyes, etc) for the Emma Frost character I feel it should be the kind of icy, hard edged, sexy like Ali Larter portrays many of her characters, and not the impish, cutesy face I've done in this picture.

Twilight: Ashley Greene
A couple of people have asked me if I was going to be doing any Twilight related stuff for the blog, to coincide with the release of the new movie.
Now while I had to watch the first movie for work, I'm really not a fan. The whole overly romanticised vampire schtick does nothing for me what so ever. I prefer the more visceral vampire angle, like Ben Templesmith's 30 Days of Night
However, like most movies aimed at the it does have it's fair share of shiny (literally), attractive people, so I thought I might as well have a stab at a portrait.
I settled on Ashley Greene, rather than go for one of the obvious lead characters as in the photos of her as the character Alice Cullen she looks very different than her "normal" look, which I found intriguing

Time to Die
Continuing with this holiday's theme of sitting on my arse watching movies and drawing characters and scenes, today's is from Blade Runner.
My all time favourite scene from the movie is Rutger Hauer's character Roy's death scene. Most of the dialogue from the scene was apparently ad-libbed and ultimately cut short for the original release of the movie. It's a very moving scene for a violent yet ultimately very sympathetic character.
So here's my homage to that scene as a quick speed painting in Photoshop, which took a little over 90 minutes. Rendering the rain was the hardest part to get it to look right. I tried a few online tutorials that I googled but in the end just went with something simpler, and I think more effective looking.

300 Spartans!
Well now that my best mate's buggered off to Canada on holiday for a month I have no one to annoy on a daily basis. So I'm watching movies back to back and burning through sketchbook pages. I can see this is going to get expensive.
One of the movies I watched yesterday was "300", which I like for the very cool fight sequences (though perhaps the slo-mo is a little overused). I keep meaning to pick up a copy of Frank Miller's original graphic novel, but like a lot of things I haven't quite got round to it yet.
Today's sketch is one of the more finished doodles I did while watching the movie.

On the Prowl
Been out of circulation for a few days, been busy with a few things and catching up with people I've not seen in a while.
Quick sketch of The Prowler, for the Drawingboards, Masks Jam again. I think I'm going to do a couple more for this Masks Jam as I think it's quite an interesting theme this time round and it gives me a chance to draw some characters that I don't think I would otherwise.
The original sketch his right arm was far too big and out of proportion, but thanks to the magic of Photoshop, you don't get to see that schoolboy error. I just have to look at it everytime I open the sketchbook!

DOOM! DOOM! DOOM!
This month's Drawingboard Jam theme is Masks, showcasing characters who use full face masks to hide their identity or create a new one.
So for my entry I decided to do a Doctor Doom, which is not a character I've ever drawn before. I was never really a big fan of The Fantastic Four growing up, and neither movie really did anything to improve my opinion of the franchise.
I'm not overly happy with the hand in this picture, I think my reach extended my grasp with regards to the pose the hand is in, and the addition of the armoured gauntlet really didn't make things any easier or clearer. But I'm pretty happy with the rendering and detailing of the pencils, which are looking pretty tight, and I think I'm starting to settle in to what could be described as "my style"
We'll just have to see how it goes from here

Dragon Age: Origins Morrigan
Dragon Age: Origins was released today, the newest RPG from Bioware. I've been a big fan of Bioware RPG's since the days of the D&D releases like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale, and this latest one is the best they've ever done.
So to celebrate the release here's a quick portrait sketch of one of the NPC characters you can invite to journey with you in the game, Morrigan the Witch of the Wilds. Oneof the best thigns about the game is the characters you interact with, and also listening how your party interact with each other.
I've not played through much of the game yet but I really recommend it to any RPG fan.
